About this data

Live from NIH RePORTER ↗, which indexes more than NIH: NIH, VA, NIOSH, AHRQ, FDA and ATSDR all appear, and a blank funder counts all of them. It does not index CDC or HRSA, so this is not the complete federal health funding picture. Open Grant does not administer funding. Each question is re-asked of RePORTER once a week — awards are loaded in batches there, so a figure here may be up to a week behind the official record.

Counts, shares and growth rates are exact — RePORTER's own match count per slice, counting grants rather than the sub-projects a centre grant is reported in. RePORTER cannot sum or group, so every dollar figure (medians, totals) and every ranking of study sections, program officers and states comes from a bounded sample of up to 500 matching awards, marked where it appears. NIH intramural projects are excluded from budget benchmarks and institution rankings — no outside applicant can compete for them. Confirm any figure on the official record before citing it.
